As modern country music increasingly blends with mainstream pop, a select few artists are committed to preserving the genre’s traditional roots. Among them is William Beckmann, a troubadour from Del Rio, Texas, whose upcoming album Whiskey, Lies, & Alibis marks a new high in his career.
“I’m probably the most excited I’ve been about a body of work in my entire career,” Beckmann says of the album, which he believes represents his best effort to date.
Beckmann, whose vintage vocals and soulful delivery echo the sounds of classic country music, is determined to remain true to the genre’s foundational elements. As he discusses the project from San Antonio on a rare 20-degree day in Texas, his warm personality shines through, and his sense of humor remains intact despite the chill.
He jokes about the brutal cold he recently faced while touring Minnesota, recalling, “It was like negative 20 when we got there. I called my agent and asked, ‘Whose grand idea was it to tour in Minnesota in the middle of February?’ We made it out alive, barely, but it was fun.”
With Whiskey, Lies, & Alibis, Beckmann continues to carve out his own space in a genre that often seems to be moving away from its roots. Fans of traditional country will find much to appreciate in this latest effort from the artist who remains dedicated to keeping the music authentic, even in an era dominated by commercial sounds.
