Bill Fay, the revered British singer-songwriter whose emotive music found a new audience later in life, has passed away at the age of 81. Known for his profound folk ballads, Fay’s work gained renewed recognition through the support of artists like Jeff Tweedy and Nick Cave, leading to a resurgence in his career.
Dead Oceans, the label that released his three most recent albums, confirmed his death via social media. The cause of death has not been disclosed. In their tribute, Dead Oceans described Fay as “a gentle man and a gentleman, wise beyond our times,” noting his immense kindness and the deeply meaningful songs he crafted throughout his life.
“Only a month before his passing, Bill was busy working on a new album,” the label wrote. “Our hope is to find a way to finish and release it, but for now, we remember Bill’s legacy as the ‘man in the corner of the room at the piano,’ quietly creating songs that will continue to touch and connect people around the world.”
