Amid ongoing debates over the relevance of lyrics in hip-hop, JID stands firm as one of the genre’s leading lyricists.
The Atlanta rapper’s journey, from his beginnings as a solo artist to his time with Spillage Village, has been remarkable. Known for his impressive rhyme schemes, JID’s talent has earned him a place on J. Cole’s Dreamville roster in 2017. Since then, he has continually proven himself as one of the industry’s top lyricists.
It has been nearly three years since the release of his highly praised album The Forever Story. Last spring, he made waves with his first solo top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, “Surround Sound,” which gained viral attention on social media.
Despite the viral success of “Surround Sound,” JID is not defined by trends like “TikTok rappers.” His work has continued to captivate fans, with standout features like “Crazier” with Ab-Soul and “Dope” with John Legend, further raising anticipation for new music.
In a recent interview with I-D magazine, JID confirmed his new album is complete and ready for release. “It’s done. It’s turned in. It’s been turned in,” he said. “It’s coming really f**ing soon. It’s been a long time in the making. All the T’s are crossed and I’s are dotted and I think we are in a good position to build this new world.”
This album is separate from a joint project with Metro Boomin, hinting that fans could be in for two major releases from the Georgia rapper.
As other major artists like Tyler, The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake focus on their respective projects, JID’s upcoming album ensures that fans of lyrical rap have something to look forward to.
