Twin Cities-based hyperpop artist SYM1 will release the music video for her song “Right 1 4 Me” on April 4. The track, which dropped on March 7, is a high-energy dance anthem featuring spacey vocals, synthesizers, and a powerful beat. Created in collaboration with New York artist moistbreezy, the song draws inspiration from the late nineties and early 2000s mallrat culture. The video was filmed at Southdale Center, a popular mall in the Twin Cities that is home to one of the few remaining Dance Dance Revolution machines in the area.
SYM1, a vocalist, producer, and performer, describes her music as a reflection of her fascination with internet culture and early online communities. She explains that hyperpop, the genre she creates, emerged from message boards and chat rooms, blending elements of dance, pop, punk, and rap music.
“My music has been described as having a punk heart with a chronically online edge,” SYM1 said.
The song “Right 1 4 Me” was inspired by SYM1’s love for Eurodance music and her collaboration with moistbreezy. Eurodance, which originated in European nightclubs during the late ’80s, became popular in the U.S. through hits like Haddaway’s “What is Love,” Gala’s “Freed from Desire,” and Darude’s “Sandstorm.”
SYM1 discovered moistbreezy’s music thanks to a recommendation from Spotify’s algorithm. After connecting on social media, the two artists have been working together for almost five years.
In the upcoming music video, SYM1 and moistbreezy dance in a vibrant arcade, transforming Southdale Center into a Eurodance-inspired scene straight out of the early 2000s. With her signature internet popstar persona, effects-laden vocals, and edgy synths, SYM1 brings her unique style to a pumping house track that recalls rhythm video games.
The music video for “Right 1 4 Me” will be available on April 4, with more new music expected later this spring.
