K-pop star G-Dragon’s music, along with an image of his iris, has been transmitted into space. This milestone was achieved through a joint project between G-Dragon and Professor Lee Jinjoon from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), which was completed on April 9.
The project, a fusion of science, technology, and art, was part of the AI Entech initiative, a collaboration between KAIST and Galaxy Corp., an artificial intelligence (AI) metaverse company. The project aimed to combine pop music with cutting-edge technology.
Professor Lee created a piece of media art titled “Iris,” using AI to generate a visual based on G-Dragon’s iris. The artwork was paired with an audio message from G-Dragon’s latest song, “Home Sweet Home.”
The music was transmitted via a next-generation small satellite developed by KAIST. The video was then displayed on a 13-meter-long space antenna through projection mapping.
“Iris represents the ‘mirror of the soul,’ reflecting emotions and identity,” Professor Lee explained. “Through G-Dragon’s gaze, this work aims to depict ‘the infinite universe as seen through humanity’s inner self.'”
Choi Yong-ho, CEO of Galaxy Corp., also commented on the project, stating, “G-Dragon’s voice and music have now embarked on a journey into space. This project is a significant step in preserving music as a part of human heritage and reaching out to the universe.”
