Lizzo’s recent claim that she almost started a rock band with SZA and Kehlani was initially met with skepticism online. However, the singer’s performance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) on April 12 confirmed that her statement wasn’t a joke.
During her first appearance as the musical guest on the late-night show, Lizzo delivered a high-energy rock-inspired medley of her songs “Love In Real Life” and “Still Bad.” The performance showcased her ability to seamlessly step into the rock genre.
While Lizzo’s musical talent took center stage, she also included several subtle tributes to influential Black music icons. Her performance began with background singers dressed in the colors of the Black Liberation Flag, sending a strong message of unity. Lizzo wore a custom electric guitar and flaunted a perfectly styled afro, reminiscent of rock legends like Betty Davis and Jimi Hendrix. Her distressed fishnet tights gave a nod to Tina Turner’s iconic style.
As Lizzo was joined by an energetic group of dancers, her set’s visual elements echoed Janet Jackson’s legendary “Rhythm Nation” music video. Whether the performance was a glimpse of her upcoming album or a preview of her potential as rock and roll’s next icon, fans were clearly impressed.
