A recent survey has ranked Manchester as the second-best city in England for pop music, just behind London.
The ranking, based on an analysis of 50 European cities, identifies the top destinations for music lovers. London topped the list for England, followed by Manchester in second place and Liverpool in third. In Europe overall, London ranked first, Manchester placed 23rd, and Liverpool was 39th.
The survey considered factors like the average prices of concert and musical tickets, as well as the number of nightclubs, open-air festivals, and pop concert venues in each city.
London, while ranking first in Europe for pop music, also holds the title for the most expensive concert tickets. The average concert ticket in London costs £105, and musical tickets average £109. In comparison, Manchester offers lower prices: £73 for concert tickets and £80 for musicals.
The survey also revealed a significant rise in concert ticket prices over the past decade, with tickets now costing 74% more than in 2011.
A spokesperson for Omio, the company behind the survey, praised Manchester’s vibrant music scene. “Manchester stands out for its lively nightlife, with around 30 clubs and a thriving underground scene,” the spokesperson said. “Venues like The Warehouse Project and Hidden are known for their electrifying nights and cutting-edge music.”
In addition to its pop music scene, Manchester is also ranked the second-best city in England for fine music, trailing only Liverpool. The city boasts three fine music venues, two major fine music festivals, and six music pubs. Liverpool placed 13th in Europe for fine music, while Manchester ranked 18th and London was further down in 50th.
Opera fans can enjoy more affordable ticket prices in Manchester, with an average opera ticket costing £45, significantly lower than London’s £126. Europe’s top city for fine music, Salzburg, Austria, offers world-class performances at an average price of £35 per ticket.
