Australia’s most exciting emerging First Nations artists will come together next month for the Ngana Birrung Festival in Western Sydney, hosted by the City of Parramatta.
The festival, headlined by hip-hop star and Gomeroi artist Kobie Dee, will showcase a mix of both new and established First Nations musicians. The free, three-night concert series will take place at Campbelltown Arts Centre (Campbelltown City Council) on Thursday, 22 May, Sherringham Reserve in Cranebrook (Penrith City Council) on Friday, 23 May, and Parramatta Town Hall on Tuesday, 27 May (City of Parramatta Council).
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor, Cr Martin Zaiter, said the festival would be a celebration of culture, music, and unity.
“Ngana Birrung is a collaborative initiative that brings together several Sydney councils to provide a platform for First Nations artists to shine,” Cr Zaiter explained.
“While Parramatta is rapidly growing as a global city, it’s equally important to honor its history. We are proud to host Ngana Birrung and celebrate over 60,000 years of First Nations culture through this exciting music festival.”
Taking place during National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), the festival’s name, Ngana Birrung, meaning ‘Black Stars’ in Dharug, reflects the event’s focus on bringing together various councils across Western Sydney to create a platform for First Nations artists to express themselves through a wide range of music, including hip hop, soul, and more.
The Ngana Birrung Festival is presented by the City of Parramatta in collaboration with Penrith City Council and Campbelltown City Council, and is supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
