Tori Forsyth Celebrates Australian Country Music Scene at BIGSOUND

by Barbara

Australian singer-songwriter Tori Forsyth is making her presence felt in Brisbane as she participates in the BIGSOUND music conference and showcase event this week. Ahead of the multi-day event, Countrytown caught up with Forsyth for an insightful Q&A.

If you’re not already familiar with Forsyth, here’s a glimpse of her background: In May 2021, she released her 13-track album titled “Provlépseis,” drawing inspiration from Greek mythology and blending her eclectic influences, which encompass artists like Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks, The Cranberries, Nirvana, and The Pretty Reckless, among others.

Explaining the album’s title, she stated, “Provlépseis means predictions in Greek. Most of the new album was recorded pre-pandemic, and it’s interesting to interpret the lyrics with the benefit of hindsight; where I might not have really known what a few songs meant at the time, I definitely do now … I’m a pretty spiritual person, but I think that just goes to show how important it is to listen to your intuition.”

Since being featured as Countrytown’s Artist Of The Week and earning the Song Of The Day distinction with “All For You,” Forsyth has embarked on national tours and graced numerous festivals, including the upcoming Groundwater Music Festival next month. Dive deeper into Forsyth’s world through the following Q&A.

First and foremost, it’s all about inspiration and self-expression. Everything else comes second. My music is lyrically driven, with the sound crafted around the narrative. I see myself as a lifelong artist and anticipate continuing this journey even when I’m 70, so integrity remains paramount.

What has been the most pivotal moment in your career thus far? My journey has been shaped by countless small moments and encounters with extraordinary, selfless individuals who genuinely want the best for my musical endeavors. There hasn’t been a singular incident that stands out, so this is my diplomatic response to a challenging question, haha!

Which other country artist are you most looking forward to seeing at BIGSOUND, and why? I’m particularly excited to catch Loren Ryan! I’ve heard great things about her.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the country music scene in Australia? It’s thriving and evolving, baby! When I started releasing country music at the age of 19, the landscape was vastly different. The fanbase is expanding. In the USA, the industry is prioritizing music over marketing, and Australia is following suit. That’s a significant victory for us.

What do you aim to gain from your experience at BIGSOUND 2023? Honestly, as a band, our primary goal is to contribute. We aspire to represent country music through lyrically driven songs that harmonize with the broader Australian music scene. We feel privileged to be a part of it; anything else is a bonus.
