Guelph Hip-Hop Artist Makes a Comeback with New Single ‘Champion’

by Patria

Local hip-hop artist Darren Piper, also known as Optikx, is set to release his latest single, “Champion,” on May 7. The track, he says, carries an inspirational message.

“It’s a song about overcoming adversity,” Piper explained. “Anyone can relate to it and make it their own.”

The song, he added, reflects the human experience of facing challenges and emerging stronger. For Piper, it’s deeply personal, representing his journey in overcoming mental health struggles such as anxiety, depression, and CPTSD.

Piper has spent over 12 years sober and in recovery from addiction, injury, and physical disabilities. He has been open about his traumatic past, including being a victim of childhood sexual assault. Through his music, he wants others to know they are not alone in their struggles.

Originally from Australia, Piper moved to Guelph and became a part of the city’s south-end community, attending Centennial C.V.I. Despite facing numerous obstacles, he continues to push forward in his music career.

Alongside “Champion,” Piper is also working on another single titled “Overnight Success.” The song speaks to the hard work and perseverance required to make it in the music industry.

“It’s been a long journey,” he said. “I’ve questioned myself at times, especially at 42 when things didn’t go the way I imagined. But it’s my journey, and I’m not giving up.”

Piper’s determination remains strong, even in the face of self-doubt. He hopes his music will inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the challenges.

“Champion” has already gained attention, becoming his most viewed teaser. Piper says the upbeat chorus resonates deeply with listeners. The single will be the fifth track on his upcoming EP, with “Overnight Success” following as the sixth. He plans to complete the EP with seven songs, with the final track holding special significance.

The last song, “What’s My Name,” is especially important to Piper. He explained that Optikx has always been his artist name, but others have stolen it over time.

Piper has received support for his music through loans from the Rise Peer Supported Startup Program, which have helped cover production costs. He has been working on his EP since 2019 at Metalworks Studios, known for being one of Canada’s top music production facilities. The sixth track is being mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer Blake Eiseman, who has worked with artists like Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Aretha Franklin.

Looking ahead, Piper is excited about the future and hopes to perform live before the year’s end. Despite the physical challenges of recovering from a fall, he says his strength continues to grow.

“Slow and steady wins the race,” Piper noted. “But I already feel like a champion.”

His ultimate goal is to create timeless music that will still be appreciated in 10 to 20 years.
