Snotty Nose Rez Kids, the Juno Award-winning hip-hop duo, were devastated by a fire that struck East Vancouver on April 23, destroying their recording studio, equipment, and clothing shop.
Rappers Quinton “Yung Trybez” Nyce and Darren “Young D” Metz, members of the Haisla Nation, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram. They wrote, “With a heavy heart, we had to watch while a fire took out our recording studio, our shop housing RBRTH clothing, and our shop for Savage Kids, not to mention irreplaceable items like paintings, artwork, custom mask carvings, and other cherished belongings.” They added, “So much time, energy, money, and effort went into these, and we watched it either burn up or get pummeled by water for over six hours.”
The fire damaged the Wohlford & Company building, which housed both their recording studio and the Savage Kids clothing shop. Two other buildings were also affected, and the fire is being treated as suspicious.
In their post, Yung Trybez and Young D announced a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to rebuild their studio and store, which was where they recorded their recent album, Red Future. The album, focused on Indigenous futurism, earned them their first Juno Award in March for Rap Album/EP of the Year. The duo also performed live at the award ceremony in Vancouver. On the GoFundMe page, they explained they lost all of their recording equipment, soundproofing panels, and “everything needed to run a recording studio.”
“If you want to offer a donation to help us rebuild, you can do so through the link in our bio. Either way, all love, and I guess it’s only up from here,” they wrote.
As of April 28, the campaign has raised over $15,000.
