Tonight, cultural icon Madonna took the tube to London’s O2 Arena in North Greenwich to conclude the sold-out European leg of her critically acclaimed The Celebration Tour. Spanning eleven countries and twenty-eight shows, the tour delivered an unparalleled experience of powerful presence, infectious energy and mesmerizing production that brought the continent to a standstill.
The Celebration Tour, which kicked off in London last October with the first of six sold-out shows at The O2, is a testament to Madonna’s groundbreaking legacy that spares no detail. With dazzling choreography, bold costumes and her most elaborate stage yet, masterfully designed by Stufish, the best-selling artist of all time delivered a non-stop, fearless performance.
As she reflected on her extraordinary career, Madonna took the rapt audience on an emotional odyssey through her greatest hits, including songs that have not been performed in decades. The show encapsulated Madonna’s past while embracing her future, from her struggling days as a New York City artist to her meteoric success, personal and professional lows, and spiritual awakening. The set list featured iconic tracks such as “Nothing Really Matters,” “Open Your Heart,” “Like A Prayer,” “Into The Groove” and “Crazy For You” and was directed for the stage by longtime collaborator Jamie King and musically orchestrated by Stuart Price.
In addition, Madonna will be joined on the show by Debi Mazar, Donlla Versace, Jean Gauder, Diplo and FKA Twigs, among others.
The Celebration Tour spans four decades of unstoppable hits. Twenty performers took the stage on a colossal 4,400-square-foot stage, the largest in Madonna’s touring history. The stage, inspired by the grid of Manhattan, featured uptown, downtown, midtown, east and west stages, with a unique three-tiered circular stage reminiscent of the wedding cake from Madonna’s original VMA performance.
Three mobile gyms, forty-five wardrobe trunks, three physical therapists and forty pairs of boxing gloves were used backstage and behind the curtain. The production featured fourteen spotlights for Madonna, over six hundred smart lights illuminating the stage, 8800 lighting cues, 80 tons of production equipment, and a traveling crew of over 200. In particular, the costume department alone consisted of 25 crew members, demonstrating the scale of the production.
The 79-date tour, produced by Live Nation, will kick off its North American leg in December in Madonna’s adopted hometown of New York City. The celebration will continue across the U.S. and Canada through the spring of 2024, concluding with four sold-out shows and a fifth and final date added due to demand in Mexico City next April.
