After a notable 17-year absence from the recording scene, music icon Billy Joel has thrilled fans with the announcement of his forthcoming single, “Turn The Lights Back On,” set to be released in February.
The 74-year-old Piano Man, a six-time Grammy winner, has described the upcoming single as a “classic Billy Joel-style tune,” capturing the essence of his signature sound and marking a significant chapter in his musical journey. In the lyrics, Joel introspectively questions, “Did I wait too long… to turn the lights back on?”
Hints of new music from Joel emerged during a performance at Madison Square Garden in December of the previous year. Addressing the audience, he shared, “I have good news and bad news. I’ll give you the bad news first. We don’t have anything new to play for you. The good news is you don’t have to sit through something you have no idea what it is. Although, we got a little something we’re working on you might hear sometime.”
“Turn The Lights Back On” marks Joel’s first true single release since “All My Life” in 2007, which achieved the top position on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales Chart. The artist’s last studio album, “Fantasies & Delusions,” debuted in 2001.
Produced and co-written by Freddy Wrexler, known for his collaborations with artists like Selena Gomez, Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West, the single is slated for release on streaming platforms on February 1. An accompanying limited edition 7″ vinyl will also be made available by Columbia Records.
While the anticipation builds for the release of Joel’s new single, it remains unknown whether this marks the beginning of a full-fledged album release. Fans eagerly await further details about the musical journey that Joel is set to embark on with “Turn The Lights Back On.”
