Blackberry Smoke drummer Brit Turner has sadly passed away at the age of 57 after a valiant battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain tumor, with which he was diagnosed in 2022.
Turner, known for his dynamic drumming style, also faced a heart attack at his Atlanta home in August of the same year. Despite this setback, he returned to the stage after having a stent placed in his coronary artery.
Last year, Turner underwent brain surgery, necessitating his temporary replacement by Kent Aberle for the band’s 2024 performances.
In a heartfelt statement released by the band, consisting of Paul Jackson, Charlie Starr, Richard Turner, and Brandon Still, they expressed their profound sadness at the loss of their bandmate and friend. They described Turner as a caring, driven, and endearing individual who served as Blackberry Smoke’s guiding force.
The group has set up a fundraising page to support Turner’s family during this difficult time, emphasizing his relentless battle against glioblastoma and requesting prayers for his loved ones and fellow band members.
Tributes poured in from the music community, with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash and country star Luke Combs among those expressing their condolences. Slash hailed Turner as a great musician, while Combs remembered him as a generous and supportive figure. Fellow rockers Black Stone Cherry also mourned Turner’s passing, acknowledging the deep connection between their bands and sending prayers and love to Turner’s family and bandmates.
Brit Turner’s legacy as a talented drummer and beloved friend will undoubtedly endure in the hearts of fans and fellow musicians alike.
