Doja Cat, the renowned rapper, with over 24 million Instagram followers, recently sparked controversy by criticizing her fan base before ultimately deleting her account on the platform.
The incident dates back to July 2023 when the “Paint the Town Red” artist, aged 28, faced backlash for condemning individuals who identified themselves as “kittenz,” resulting in a loss of nearly 200,000 followers. In her rebuke, she urged followers to “get off your phone and get a job and help your parents with the house.”
However, the decision to deactivate her account was not solely a response to this incident. In a statement shared on Saturday, Doja, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, cited concerns about her mental well-being as the primary reason behind her departure.
In a message reported by Complex, Doja conveyed her intention to step away from Instagram, stating, “Hey, I’m gonna deactivate because I’m not really feeling this anymore. You guys take care of yourselves.” She expressed appreciation for the platform as a source of inspiration and creativity but highlighted the negative impact of online interactions on her mental state. “The way I’m spoken to on here and treated makes me have f**ked up thoughts,” she added, urging users to be mindful of their language and behavior online.
Despite the setback experienced last summer, where she faced a decline in followers, Doja Cat’s Instagram page boasted a considerable following of over 24 million users before its deletion. Her decision to distance herself from the platform underscores broader discussions around mental health and the impact of social media on individuals, particularly those in the public eye.
