Zayn Malik says his new album is “raw and honest”.
The 31-year-old former One Direction singer will release his fourth studio album, Room Under The Stairs, on May 17, his first since 2021’s Nobody Is Listening.
He told Hot Ones Online: “The new album is very different from anything I’ve released before.
“It’s just really raw and honest and I hope people get that when they listen to it, I hope they get some insight into how I’m feeling and the things I’ve been going through over the last six or seven years while I’ve been writing this record, and that’s the most important thing for me, I just want people to feel that they get a connection with the record.”
Malik has released the cover of ‘Room Under The Stairs’, which features a profile of his face and blueprints of the house he’s building.
Regarding the title, he adds “I recorded most of the song in a small shoebox in my house, so I thought it would be fitting to name the song after that room so people could get a deeper sense of the idea behind the song.
Malik also denied pushing his music on others, adding: “I don’t like to tell people about my music when they come over – ‘You’ve got to listen to my music’ – but if I have time to listen to stuff myself, I’ll listen to my music a lot.
Malik, who lives in Pennsylvania and has a daughter with model Gigi Hadid, released the first single from the album, What I Am, on March 15 and posted a short video on Instagram teasing the album’s launch.
He said in the clip: “I think the intention behind this album fully is for the listener to get more insight on me personally as a human being.
“My ambitions, my fears… and for them to have a connection with that. And that’s why it’s so raw, you know?
“There’s just me writing this. I didn’t want anyone else to be in between me and the music, and the music and the people listening to it.”
