IFPI, the global organization representing the recorded music industry, has unveiled three new Global Album Charts that showcase the standout releases of 2023 based on sales, including top-selling vinyl and streaming albums.
Following the recent launch of the IFPI Global Music Report, which revealed a 10.2% growth in recorded music revenues worldwide and significant increases in subscription streaming and physical format sales, IFPI’s latest announcement focuses on the remarkable achievements in album sales for the year.
SEVENTEEN, the Korean group, secured the top spot on the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart with their album “FML,” which sold an impressive 6.4 million units globally in 2023. This success marked a milestone as the album received the highest number of pre-orders ever for a South Korean release.
The IFPI Global Album Sales Chart notably featured 19 out of the Top 20 albums from South Korean artists, underlining their dominance in the physical album market. The only non-Korean artist to break into the Top 20 was Taylor Swift, the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year, whose album “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” also topped the IFPI Global Vinyl Album Chart.
Taylor Swift’s achievements were further highlighted by her dominance in the IFPI Global Vinyl Album Chart, occupying the top three positions with “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” and “Midnights.” Additionally, Swift had seven albums in the Top 20 of the chart, showcasing her enduring popularity and impact on the vinyl format.
American artist Morgan Wallen achieved his first IFPI Global Chart #1 on the IFPI Global Streaming Album Chart with his album “One Thing at a Time,” making it the most streamed album of the year. Wallen also secured the ninth spot with “Dangerous: The Double Album.”
Lewis Morrison, Director of Global Charts & Certifications at IFPI, praised SEVENTEEN, Taylor Swift, and Morgan Wallen for their chart-topping success in 2023. He emphasized the global appeal and commercial success of their music, highlighting the diverse ways in which music enthusiasts engage with their favorite albums worldwide.
Morrison further highlighted the growth in revenues from digital and physical music formats, attributing this success to exceptional artistry, format diversity, and the dedicated efforts of record labels. He commended all artists featured in the album charts, summarizing 2023 as a phenomenal year for the global recorded music industry.
